Quick and Easy to make meal with staple ingredients

IMG_1742.JPG

Cooking with pantry staples can be challenging sometimes.

Currently we are living difficult and challenging times and even though I have decided not to go too much into this topic as I wanted give you something else, something positive to think about, I still want to adress it in a way and that is in relation to food. Depending on where you are located you might have difficulties of getting specific products in the shops right now. I am not even going to start about the toilet paper here..Because, I just don't want to go there :D Here in Germany we are doing pretty good when it comes to how the supermarkets are stocked. There are only a few things that are almost unavailable like flour and fresh yeast. However, I know that the situation can be very different depending on where you are. So I thought I would show you some very simple but delicious dishes that you can cook during this time or when you ae trying to live on a budget.

The recipe today is super simple to make and it takes only about 15-20 minutes at most. You need only 4 ingredients, vegetable oil for frying, onions, rice and salt for seasoning. That being said you can of course if you want add more seasoning to it and add other things to it as well or serve it as a side rather than as a main. So there are endless options for you there, I just wanted to show you the simplest possible option that would still taste delicious.

This fried rice with onions is also a great way to use up any leftover rice that you might have from a meal you  made on a previous day. That just means you have even less prep work to do and the dish will be ready faster.

As it is â€‹a really simple dish with really simple ingredients, you really want to give the onion time to cook and brown nicely as that will give your rice a great flavour. Then also don't forget to season well with salt and if you want add any other seasoning to your liking.

Sometimes I make this fried rice and serve it as a main and sometimes I make it as a side. However, I have to say that I really love it on its own, because of the flavour that the onion gives to it. If you like onion, then I am sure you will also really like this fried rice with onion.

Enjoy!

RECIPE

Fried Rice with Onion

Quick and Easy to make meal with staple ingredients

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 white onions

  • olive oil

  • 1 cup basmati rice or any other rice

  • 2 cups cold water

  • salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Peel and slice the onions.

  2. Heat a medium pan over medium heat and once warm cover the bottom with olive oil and add in the onions. Cook the onions on medium heat until translucent.

  3. In the meantime cook the rice in salted water according to packaging instructions.

  4. Once the onions are translucent and soft, turn the heat up a little to start the browning. You want to caramelize the onions by slowly browning them. If you notice that the onions brown too fast, turn down the heat a little.

  5. Once the onions are beautifully brown and caramelized and the rice is cooked through, add the rice to the pan with onions and shortly fry over medium heat while mixing to combine the rice with the onions. Season with salt to taste.

  6. Enjoy!
