Traditional German Potato Salad

Potato Salad the German Way

IMG_7870.JPG

I have a feeling that every country has some kind of a potato salad. In Russia it is the salad olivier and in Germany it is the German potato salad. The German version had me question how it could taste, because I am a fan of complex recipes with a lot of flavours and this salad doesn´t have many ingredients.

But I was taken by surprise, because the combination of flavours in this salad is so delicious! I love this salad, for its simplicity and for how it tastes.

Feel like you want to throw an Octoberfest Party for your friends? This is a perfect recipe to go along with some German sausages and beer, believe me, I know what I am talking about :)

Get your German vibe on and try out this delicious potato salad!

RECIPE

Traditional German Potato Salad

Potato Salad the German Way

INGREDIENTS

  • 5 medium potatoes

  • 1 medium white onion

  • 6-8 medium gherkins (pickled cucumbers)

  • 4 medium eggs

  • 3 tbsp yoghurt or soured cream (10% fat)

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2-1 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp sugar

  • 1 tsp mustard

DIRECTIONS

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into big pieces (this will ensure they do not get all mushy while boiling).

  2. Boil the potatoes on medium heat just until cooked, be careful not to over cook them. Drain and cool with cold water. Leave to cool.

  3. Boil eggs for 10 minutes. Leave to cool.

  4. In the meantime cut onion into small cubes and dice gherkins.

  5. Once potatoes have cooled, cube them into fairly big pieces and then cube the eggs.

  6. Take a big bowl and add the vegetables and eggs to it.

  7. To prepare the dressing mix yoghurt, mayonnaise, salt, black pepper, sugar and mustard in a small bowl. Add to the salad bowl and mix well.

  8. Enjoy chilled with some dark bread or as a side to your steak!
